Finally Here!!!!

He's finally here! Well, he was actually finally here as of 7:29 yesterday evening, but as I'm sure you can imagine, I've been a little busy and haven't been able to blog until now. I can now divulge the secret name. It's Conan Norman Kent Jackson. I said that it may be controversial, and I'm sure that a good 60% of you all think the name is weird, but we love it. When going through our baby name book, we were partial to Irish names. There were a few on the list, but this is the one that Ben and I both really liked and agreed on. At first we were nervous because it isn't a common name at all (not in the top 1000 boys names), and we knew that a lot of people wouldn't like it, but after much discussion, we knew that it was the right name regardless. Norman is Ben's maternal grandfather's name, also a name that I really like. Miles middle name, Leo, is after my maternal grandfather, and we wanted to get both grandpa's in there. Kent is Ben's dad's biological father's last name. It's also a middle name of I think all the Jackson boy's, so I really wanted to continue that tradition. Miles also has the second middle name of Kent.

We almost didn't get to have our little Conan here yesterday. We had scheduled an elective induction for yesterday. I guess that I didn't realize that elective means, it's not really going to happen. They have you fast and get all ready, then call a half hour before you are scheduled to tell you if you can actually come. I completely understand that women who go into natural labor certainly have priority and can't reschedule, but we were pretty dependent on getting in yesterday. Ben had scheduled it off and would have had a very difficult time scheduling more training time off. I think that I've mentioned that although Ben still gets his 2 weeks paternity time, he's not actually able to take it now because he is in training and has to be there. So, really, this time, it's just 2 weeks extra vacation. Of course, when we called in at 7:00 am, we were told to call back at 8:00. At 8:00, we were told to call back at 10:00. I explained that we lived an hour away, and I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do, and was then basically told that we wouldn't be able to come in anyway (so why was I supposed to call back at 10:00). Again, I understand that women in labor can't get bumped to accommodate my induction, but we were actually told that that wasn't the reason. They just didn't have enough staff. Wait. This was scheduled a week ago. Why wasn't staff scheduled? That seems pretty stupid. I was pretty discouraged, so Ben took the phone. He firmly but appropriately explained that if this didn't happen today (yesterday) that he would not be able to be here for our son's birth. That didn't seem to make too much difference at the time, but about a half hour later, we got a call saying that after speaking with our doctor, they were told to have us come in at 10:00 to be induced. Good job Ben! You're fantastic speaking skills have done it again!

We got here a few minutes early, and by 10:00, I was in a room on petosin. I was expecting to get grief from the nurses for being so pushy, but everyone was so nice......well, the charge nurse did keep bringing up something about someone who was due before us getting bumped to make us feel guilty. I don't though. I'd rather have my husband present. Anyway, with that one exception, everyone worked so hard to make us feel completely comfortable and get things going as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Unfortunately, things didn't progress very quickly on my part. After several hours of petosin, I wasn't doing much. My doctor had a C-section scheduled (and I still don't understand why this would help with any conflict, but it worked out), so he decided that he needed to break my water and get me an epidural asap. Things started moving along after that. Not enough though. two hours of pushing later, still not much. Not too surprising to me. We had quite the struggle with Miles. Dr. Tanner ended up using a vacuum of some sort and doing some cutting (sorry, I'm really trying not to be at all graphic) and got that baby delivered.

Conan was born at 7:29. He weighed 7 lbs. 4 ozs. and is 19.5 inches long. He looks exactly like his big brother did except he has more hair, and his eyes are quite as googly. In fact, they look so much alike, that the reality of having a second child has not hit me at all. I just feel like Miles is an infant again. We lucked out with another well-tempered baby. He hardly cries. So far, it's really just when he needs to be changed. Hopefully, he keeps that up. We would love to have another baby that is as content as Miles was. That would really make our potential family vacation in September so pleasant.

What else? Miles came to see his baby Cocoa last night. I think that he was pretty confused. I think that he just thought that I was calling my tummy a baby. I'm sure that he had no concept that there was actually a baby inside. He was a little tentative, but he did say that he loves the baby. We'll see how he feels when he realizes that this baby is coming home with us. I think we'll probably get the two extremes. He'll probably try to love the baby a little too much, but I'm sure there will also be those times that he tries to dispose of his little brother. We'll just make sure that they are both well-supervised. I really think that with a little time, Miles will love having a little brother to take care of.

I think that that about covers it. Everyone is healthy and doing well. I expect we'll be going home tomorrow afternoon. It will be nice to take our addition home and get into a routine as a whole family. I'm excited for everyone to get to see him. He's super great, and we'd be happy to have you all visit. Please just give a call first because I'm sure that our house will be full of all sorts of chaos, and I'd hate to expose you all to that.
